Zoom Guidelines for Parents

Guidelines for parents using online communication methods:

  1. It is the responsibility of parents and guardians to ensure that pupils are supervised while they work online.
  2. Check over the work which pupils send to their teacher, ensuring it is appropriate.
  3. Continue to revise online safety measures with pupils.

For video calls

  1. Ensure that the school has the correct email address for inviting you to join online platforms and meetings. Notifications of zoom meetings will also be forwarded via the Seesaw or Google classroom platforms as appropriate.
  2. It is helpful if you rename your child as the user on the device that is being used so that their name will show on the display/waiting room. Please do not allow your child to use any other usernames or coded names.
  3. Make sure to familiarise your child with the software in advance. For video in particular, show them how to mute/unmute and turn the camera on/off.
  4. The main purpose of a video call is to maintain a social connection between the school staff and pupils at this difficult time. Encourage pupils to listen and enjoy the experience.

Guidelines for pupils and parents using online communication methods:

  1. Dress appropriately for school.
  2. Be aware of your surroundings.  Choose a room with as little distraction as possible but with an adult close by. Be mindful of noise from other people or pets.
  3. Ensure that you have a clean, work-appropriate background with good lighting. It is worthwhile testing out your camera and audio before your start. Try to have all of your head showing especially your mouth, this ensures everyone can see who is talking.
  4. Mute your microphone when you’re not talking.  Only turn it on if you are invited to speak. Muting your microphone when you’re not speaking allows others to share their thoughts without distraction or frustration.
  5. Use the hand icon to show you would like to speak.
  6. Show respect by listening to others when they are speaking.
  7. Do not use the chat function unless invited to by your teacher. Be respectful at all times when using Chat.

  1. Eliminate distractions and focus on the class or meeting. If you are using your phone/tablet or laptop to attend the online class or meeting, close all other apps and mute notifications.
  2. Screen shots or recordings of the meeting may not be taken
  3. No eating allowed during online classes or meetings
  4. Stay seated and stay present during online classes or meetings. Do not leave the room or talk to others not participating in the class or meeting

Sanctions:

  1. If you do not follow these guidelines and repeatedly disrupt your own learning and that of others, you can be removed from the class or meeting, either for a specified period or for the entire session.
  2. If the poor behaviour is repeated, the teacher, in the first instance, or the principal, will engage with you and your parents or guardians.
  3. Be patient! Online classes and meetings are new to most of us and we are all learning.
